Pader André Engeln overleden

Vanuit het verzorgingstehuis Berchmanianum in Nijmegen kregen wij het bericht, van het overlijden van onze geliefde medebroeder

Een groot deel van zijn leven bracht hij als pastor door op Curaçao.
Tot het laatst heeft hij meegeleefd met zijn parochianen en met zijn geliefde Curaçao.
Maandag, 18 mei, zal hij begraven worden op het klooster kerkhof van de Dominicanen te Nijmegen.

Message to the Priests of the Antilles Episcopal Conference

The Bishops of the Antilles Episcopal Conference greet the priests of the Region: “We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father” (I Thess. 1:2-4).Your vocation is a lofty one, in imitation of Jesus Christ of whom the writer of Hebrews says, “Chosen by God from among the People”.

To facilitate a deepening of the spirituality of priestly service and witness, we, the Bishops of the Conference, bring to your attention the announcement of the “Year of the Priest” by our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. It will open on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, June 19, 2009. It will close a year later on the same date with a World Meeting of Priests in Rome.

We ask that this special year be celebrated in each diocese of the Conference with seriousness and joy. The theme of the year is: “Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of Priests”. The patron of the year is St. John Vianney. 2009 is the 150th anniversary of his death. He was a priest who was present to his people. He visited them, taught them and reconciled them.

Three levels of planning are already in place:

1) The Congregation for the Clergy will publish a collection of texts from the Holy Father for reflection on themes essential to the priestly life and mission in the world;

2) The Congregation for the Clergy will publish a Directory for Confessors and Spiritual Directors;

3) The Congregation for the Clergy in dialogue with Diocesan Bishops and Superiors of Religious Institutes will promote and coordinate pastoral initiatives to help the people appreciate the mission of priests in the Church and help priests appreciate the need for continuing formation and for associating that formation with seminarians.

Sacred Scripture, especially Jesus’ teaching to his Disciples, Paul’s Pastoral Letters and the Letter to the Hebrews, together with the above mentioned sources of spirituality will provide material for gatherings of priests for study and retreat, for spiritual reading and reflection and for priestly renewal and recommitment. In addition, we recommend that each priest read reflectively the address of the Holy Father to the Congregation for the Clergy which is attached to this letter.

Finally, the Year of the Priest should challenge the entire Presbyterate of the Antilles Episcopal Conference to renew their commitment to the ministry of vocation recruitment for the priesthood, to the care for vocations to the priesthood and for journeying with candidates for the priesthood. Furthermore, let us not forget that vocations are nurtured on the Word of God and the Eucharist.

Once again, we thank the priests of the region for their collaboration as we serve witness and try to build the kingdom together by sanctifying, teaching and shepherding.

Bemoedigende woorden paus voor katholieken in Midden-Oosten

Hilversum (Van onze redactie) 10 mei 2009 - Paus Benedictus XVI heeft vanochtend in het internationaal stadion in de Jordaanse hoofdstad Amman de eucharistie gevierd met ongeveer 20.000 katholieken uit alle delen van het Midden-Oosten. Het was de eerste openluchtmis van het pausbezoek aan het Heilig Land.

Diep getroffen
In zijn homilie sprak de Heilige Vader bemoedigende woorden tot de gelovigen. "De katholieke gemeenschap hier is diep getroffen door de moeilijkheden en onzekerheden bij alle mensen in het Midden-Oosten. Vergeet nooit de grote waardigheid van uw christelijk erfgoed. En laat niet na u bewust te zijn van de liefdevolle solidariteit van al uw broeders en zusters in de Kerk in heel de wereld", aldus de paus.

Vlaggen
Bij zijn intrede in het stadion werd de paus enthousiast bejubeld door de aanwezige gelovigen. Aan de mis namen christenen van verschillende nationaliteiten deel. Er werd gezwaaid met vlaggen van Jordanië, Palestina, Irak, Libanon, Syrië en andere landen. De meeste gezangen en lezingen in de eucharistie waren in het Arabisch. De paus sprak de menigte toe in het Engels.

Latijnse patriarch
Aan het begin van de eucharistieviering werd Benedictus welkom geheten door de Latijnse Patriarch van Jeruzalem, mgr. Fouad Twal. Deze in Jordanië geboren bisschop zei dat er in de rooms-katholieke gemeenschap in het Heilig Land te weinig personen zich tot het priesterschap geroepen voelen. De patriarch vroeg de paus te bidden voor meer roepingen.

Bethanië
Vanmiddag reist de paus van Amman naar Bethanië, dat aan de overkant van de Jordaan ligt. Daar zal hij de eerste stenen zegenen van te bouwen kerken van de plaatselijke Latijnse en Grieks-melkitische geloofsgemeenschappen. Daarna keert hij terug naar Amman. Morgen vliegt de paus naar Tel Aviv, waar hij ontvangen zal worden door de Israëlische autoriteiten.

Paus mag zijn schoenen aanhouden in moskee

Hilversum (AFP/ANP/Van onze redactie) 10 mei 2009 - Paus Benedictus XVI en zijn gevolg hebben gisteren hun schoenen aan mogen houden toen hij in de Jordaanse hoofdstad Amman de gebedsruimte van de El Hussein bin Talal-moskee betrad. Begeleiders vonden het niet nodig dat de leider van de Rooms-Katholieke Kerk zijn schoenen uittrok.

Geen gebrek aan respect
Dat de paus zijn schoenen aanhield heeft dus niets te maken met een gebrek aan respect voor de islam, haastte het Vaticaan te verklaren. Benedictus zou van plan zijn geweest zijn schoenen uit te trekken, overeenkomstig islamitisch gebruik, zei de pauselijke woordvoerder Federico Lombardi.

Gebaar van goede wil
Prins Ghazi Bin Muhammed Bin Talal, neef van koning Abdullah II en diens adviseur in godsdienstzaken, begeleidde de Heilige Vader in de moskee. Dat de paus zijn schoenen mocht aanhouden was volgens de prins een "gebaar van goede wil en een teken van wederzijds respect tussen moslims en christenen".


Regensburger rede
De stappen van Benedictus in de islamitische wereld worden nauwlettend in de gaten gehouden, omdat hij veel moslims tegen zich in het harnas heeft gejaagd. Tijdens een toespraak in Regensburg enkele jaren geleden citeerde hij een Middeleeuwse keizer, die opvattingen van de islam als kwaadaardig en onmenselijk had bestempeld. Prins Ghazi Bin Muhammed Bin Talal zei gisteren te erkennen dat de paus niet de intentie had gehad de islam te beledigen.

Istanbul
Tijdens zijn bezoek aan Istanbul in december 2006, trok Benedictus zijn schoenen uit toen hij de gebedsruimte van de Blauwe Moskee betrad. Johannes Paulus II deed dat ook toen hij in mei 2001 in Damascus de Grote Moskee van de Ummayaden bezocht.
