Katholieke organisaties vragen om revisie anticonceptivaverbod

Hilversum (Reuters/Van onze redactie) 25 juli 2008 - Meer dan 50 katholieke groeperingen hebben vandaag een gezamenlijke brief aan paus Benedictus XVI gepubliceerd waarin ze hem oproepen het ‘catastrofale’ kerkelijke verbod op voorbehoedsmiddelen op te heffen. De oproep werd gepubliceerd in de Italiaanse krant Corriere della Sera.

Catastrofaal
Volgens de groeperingen heeft het voorbehoedsmiddelenbeleid van de Kerk “een catastrofale impact op de armen en machtelozen ter wereld, brengt het de levens van vrouwen in gevaar, en stelt het miljoenen bloot aan het risico op HIV”. De encycliek is volgens hen “een bron van conflict en verdeeldheid binnen de Kerk. Onder de groeperingen die de advertentie plaatsen zijn dissidente organisaties als Catholics for Choice uit de VS, Catholic Women Ordination uit Groot-Brittannië en Roman Catholic Women Priests uit Canada.

40 jaar
Vandaag is het precies 40 jaar geleden dat paus Paulus VI de geruchtmakende encycliek Humanae Vitae publiceerde. Daarin schreef de pontifex dat het gebruik van de ‘pil’ en andere anticonceptiva indruist tegen de “kuise huwelijksliefde”, omdat deze middelen volgens hem de seksualiteit beroven van haar wezenlijke doel: de voortplanting.

Seksuele revolutie
Humanae Vitae veroorzaakte grote verdeeldheid onder katholieke gelovigen. Volgens velen stond de encycliek haaks op het moderne levensoptimisme van het Tweede Vaticaans Concilie (1962-1965). Deze kerkvergadering had namelijk besloten dat het primaire doel van de huwelijk niet slechts de voortplanting was, maar ook het welzijn van de beide echtelieden. Ook tegen de achtergrond van de seksuele revolutie leidde dit pauselijk schrijven in de Westerse wereld tot een omvangrijke kerkverlating van teleurgestelde gelovigen.

Gaudium et Spes
Paus Paulus VI werd door anderen geprezen voor zijn standvastigheid en zijn trouw aan de katholieke traditie. Zij wezen critici erop dat Paulus VI op consequente wijze de leer van het concilie had geactualiseerd. In het conciliedocument Gaudium et Spes stond immers dat het huwelijk en de huwelijksliefde van nature zijn geordend op voortplanting en opvoeding. Volgens Paulus VI betekende dit dat seksualiteit nooit van de voortplanting mag worden afgesloten.

Onbegrip
De kans dat paus Benedictus aan de oproep van de katholieke groeperingen gehoor zal geven is klein. In mei van dit jaar verdedigde Benedictus Humanae Vitae nog, en stelde hij dat de woorden van zijn voorganger “vaak niet worden begrepen, of verkeerd worden geïnterpreteerd”. En in een interview met Radio Vaticana stelde de woordvoerder van het Vaticaan, pater Federico Lombardi, dat veel van de organisaties achter de oproep “zeer onbeduidend” zijn. Hij deed hun oproep verder af als “betaalde propaganda voor het gebruik van anticonceptiva”.

“Prophets of a New Age”

So referred Pope Benedict XVI to the young people at World Youth Day in Australia. We offer a summary, in 35 brief passages, of what the Holy Father said to them and to the youth of the world.


1. “As the source of our new life in Christ, the Holy Spirit is also, in a very real way, the soul of the Church, the love that binds us to the Lord and to one another, and the light that opens our eyes to see all around us the wonders of God’s grace.” (CM)

2. “We have to let God’s love break through the hard crust of our indifference, our spiritual weariness, our blind conformity to the spirit of this age. Only then can we let it ignite our imagination and shape our deepest desires. That is why prayer is so important: daily prayer, private prayer in the quiet of our hearts and before the Blessed Sacrament, and liturgical prayer in the heart of the Church.” (CM)

3. “Dear young people: What will you leave to the next generation? Are you building your lives on firm foundations? Are you living in a way that opens a space for the Spirit in the midst of a world that wants to forget God, or even rejects him in the name of a falsely-conceived freedom? 22. “Love has a particular trait: it has a task or purpose to fulfill—to abide. By its nature, love is enduring. 23. “The Holy Spirit is God eternally giving himself; like a never-ending spring he pours forth nothing less than himself. In view of this ceaseless gift, we come to see the limitations of all that perishes, the folly of the consumerist mindset. When Jesus was twelve she experienced every parent’s worst nightmare when for three days the child was missing. And after his public ministry she suffered the agony of witnessing his crucifixion and death. Throughout her trials she remained faithful to her promise, sustained by the Spirit of fortitude.
